Continuing with CESM Foundation's concern about human resources planification in health care, and specially in relation to physicians, showed with the publication, in 1999, of El Número de Médicos en España. Análisis de una situación crítica (Physicians number in Spain. Analysis of a critical situation), we present its 2004 updating, adding new data sources and a plenty of images to make easier its understanding. The perception of the health care sector in Spain has changed in last years. Notwithstanding the growing in number of physicians, and despite of some working precarity, with its consequence of emigration to another European countries, we cannot maintain the idea of physicians oversupply in Spain. Our numbers are in the European level, and countries with lower numbers are in difficult situations because of doctors shortages. But, after a small period (ten to fifteen years) in which our suply will grow, then we will suffer and important decay from the year 2019, with the consequent risk for the quality of health care in our country. In fact, we suffer already some disparities in specialty and geographic distribution. Lack of data about these items makes this publication an excellent initial point in any atempt to plan about professional resources in Spanish health care system. CESM Foundation offers its cooperation to any people and organization who wish to deep in the analysis of data published in this book. The book is published in Spanish language.
